As we are going into week 4, and progressing toward the Design Challenge, it is crucial to have a plan or a consistent daily schedule to follow. Gantt chart can be a great planning tool and is helpful in planning and scheduling tasks and projects.
History of Gantt Chart
Gantt charts have an interesting history. This management tool was originated in the 1800s when a Polish engineer Karol Adamiecki invented a graph called harmonograph. The harmonograph was invented to systematically display the production schedules of the factory workers throughout the day. But at that time, these findings were only published in Polish and Russian language.
Thereafter, in 1910, Henry Laurence Gantt, a management consultant,
and an engineer, was also working on a similar concept. He designed a chart to
help manufacturing managers plan a consistent schedule for their work. With
time, it evolved into Gantt charts and therefore named after Henry Gantt, the
inventor of Gantt Chart.
In previous semesters and different modules, the Gantt chart has been my project management tool and has always help me arrange and administrate my work schedules. It helped me cope with numerous assignments and their deadlines. During group assignments, the Gantt chart not only helped us to manage our tasks but also assisted us to distribute the work, and acted as a task checklist.
Image 1: My weekly Gantt chart
The above image is a weekly Gantt chart for the module Creativity and Innovation. It has a total of 13 tasks and topics, and a period of 14 weeks to follow it. The above Gantt chart can be slightly modified along time as it is an interpretation and assumption of the task durations. It is completely acceptable to have minor changes in your Gantt chart as long as the tasks meet the deadlines.
